On the Way to School

We have been learning how to write a set of instructions. We looked at various examples of written instructions and created our own set of success criteria.
We will be successful when:

  • We have used a heading or title
  • We have included a list of ingredients or materials
  • We have listed our instructions step by step
  • We have numbered our instructions
  • We have used 'bossy' verbs
  • Our instructions are clear and precise
In class this week we have made toast, banana milkshakes, pocket books and we have grown cress. We are becoming excellent instructional writers!

Whoops! Bit of a surprise today with the worm farm - I came home to find a couple of them had escaped!
I have fixed the gap and hopefully
there won't be any more escapees!
There are lots of new worm castings so
things seem to be going ok so far.

I can't believe it is nearing the end of my teacher training. What a full on and rewarding year I have had so far. I have really enjoyed being placed in one classroom all year and really getting to know the students.

One last placement coming up with lots of exciting things happening!

We are looking at Sustainability through Inquiry as well as learning to play the ukulele! Ukulele's in the classroom are so much fun! I learnt how to play last year and it has been great to be able to bring out the ukulele in class and sing with the students.

The link below has some great free resources including a Teacher's Resource Book.

Went to a great workshop this morning organised by the Otago branch of the NZ Reading Association. Gail Loane spoke all about teaching writing and enhancing students writing experiences. Came away with some great ideas! Also heard from David Elliot - author and illustrator, what a talented guy! Looking forward to his new children's picture book to be released this year.
