The Great Worm Farming Experiment!

As part of a Sustainability unit I am team teaching this term, I am hoping to make a classroom worm farm. There is lots of online information about worm farming with different ideas on how to build one. I thought I would build a small one at home to see how it worked.
My own children were very excited about this project!

We used:

1 x cheap standard bucket
1 x hanging basket pot with holes in the bottom
1 x lid
1 x hessian cover
1 x container of Tiger Worms - approx 200 worms
Newspaper
Compost

  • We put the basket pot inside the bucket - we are hoping that this will catch the 'worm juice'.
  • Then we put in several layers of damp newspaper with some compost on top of that.

  • Then we added our worms along with the newspaper and worm castings that came with them.

  • After that we added some food for our worms, we used some potato peelings and lettuce leaves. These worms don't like citrus like oranges or lemons and they also don't like meat, kiwifruit or onions.

  • Then we put our dampened hessian mat on the top.

  • Last but not least the lid! Tadaaa! One little worm farm. We found a nice shady spot for our worm farm so that it wouldn't get too warm.

The experiment begins!!
